THE FERRYMAN: FERRYMAN TAKES YOU ON A JOURNEY FROM KNOWN TO UNKOWN, FROM ONE WORLD TO ANOTHER

my senior fashion collection is inspired by the timeless figure of the ferryman and his journey from the known to the unknown. I was drawn to the themes of transition, duality, and discovery that the ferryman represents and have brought them to life through my designs. The color palette of white, black, and gold further accentuates these themes and adds a touch of luxury to each piece.

mood and concept

To capture the essence of the ferryman's journey, my mood and concept board features a series of collages and juxtapositions that reflect the various stages of the journey. The board begins with a stark image of a dark, foreboding river, representing the ferryman's departure from the known world. This is followed by an array of textures and materials, including white feathers, golden chains, and black lace, symbolizing the duality and complexity of the journey. Moving further into the board, a sequence of black and white photos highlights the ferryman's encounters with various characters, including the living and the dead. These images show the different textures and fabrics used in my collection, from flowing chiffon to structured leather, representing the ferryman's journey through different stages and transitions. The board concludes with an image of the ferryman's boat, anchored in a calm and tranquil sea. This symbolizes the completion of the journey and the ultimate goal of the ferryman's mission - to bring the living and the dead to their respective worlds.

The journey from known to unknown IS a sense of discovery;

a journey in between two contrasting elements;

a thin line of duality between the living and the dead, black and white, light and shadow, old and new, shell and core, young and aged, rigid and dynamic.

design elements

My collection features a primarily white and black color scheme, representing the duality of life and death. The use of gold accents symbolizes the connection between the physical and spiritual worlds, while the play of light and shadow reflects the interface between the two. The different textures and fabrics used in each design symbolize the ferryman's journey from one stage to the next.

Storytelling through Fashion

Each piece in my collection tells a unique part of the ferryman's journey. For instance, the first look represents the beginning of the journey, as the ferryman sets out into the unknown. The black and gold dress SYMBOLISES the transition from one world to another, while the skirt with golden accents represents the thin line between the living and the dead. My designs aim to bring the ferryman's journey to life and create a narrative that is both visually stunning and thought-provoking.

MUSLIN COLLECTION SHOWCASE

THROUGH MY COLLECTION, I AIM TO CAPTURE THE BEAUTY AND MYSTERY OF THIS JOURNEY, SHOWCASING THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF CHANGE AND GROWTH. EACH PIECE TELLS A UNIQUE PART OF THE STORY, REFLECTING THE DIFFERENT STAGES OF THE JOURNEY AND THE EMOTIONS AND EXPERIENCES THAT COME WITH IT. FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE JOURNEY, WHERE THE FERRYMAN SETS OUT FROM THE KNOWN WORLD, TO THE ARRIVAL AT THE NEW WORLD, WHERE WE ARE TRANSFORMED BY THE EXPERIENCE, MY COLLECTION INVITES THE AUDIENCE TO JOIN ME ON THIS JOURNEY AND DISCOVER THE BEAUTY AND EXCITEMENT OF THE NEW WORLD.

Exploring the Play of Light and Shadow

in creating this collection, I utilized a range of luxurious materials including leather, satin, velvet, tulle, and organdy. The challenge was to experiment with the different types of fabrics to find the perfect mix and match that would evoke the essence of the ferryman's journey. The incorporation of the gold lines, a symbolic representation of the ferryman's role, added a touch of elegance and sophistication to each garment.

Through the use of gold leaf on various fabrics, I discovered the intricate play of light and dark that comes with working with an all-black collection. The velvet used in my first look is a soft and plush fabric, but for my second look, I wanted to create a more structured silhouette. By adding a thick facing, the black became more muted, absorbing the light. To make it visually interesting and striking, I chose to use satin as a separator to release more light. The organdy underneath the huge sleeves was thick and reflective, so to blend it in with the rest of the collection, I added one or two layers of tulle on top. The result is a cohesive and captivating collection that truly captures the essence of the ferryman's journey.
